Kiting News 2013Today is Thursday June 11th, 2026Click here to go To 2014 Click here to go To 2012 12/02/2013 Kiting Magazine Arrives! The winter edition of Kiting magazine arrived today. There are lots of great pictures and articles, including the AKA 2014 calendar. In "Debatable", the pros and cons of the festival candy drop are discussed, there are a couple of pages highlighting Gary Engvall's love of and contribution to all of kinds of kiting, there are pages of great pictures from Antelope Island, WSIFK, Lincoln City, and full coverage of Seaside. The Kiting magazine is a benefit of membership in the American Kitefliers Association. You can visit the AKA online at www.kite.org ![]() 11/28/2013 Lines of a Different Kind No doubt Black Friday sales will cause shoppers to stand in lines at their favorite stores. But you can escape those lines and fly kites with Kiting Tampa Bay for their Third Annual "No Lines But Kite Lines" fly day on Treasure Island Beach. Weather should be perfect and there is lots of room so come out and fly a kite or just throw a blanket and watch the sky. Kiting Tampa Bay was recently awarded Kite Club of the Year by the American Kiting Association. You can find more information on the event page of their website www.kitingtampabay.com. 11/15/2013 BeachWeeks Brings Back the Kites to New Smyrna Beach This Saturday and Sunday the New Smyrna beachweeks adds another kite festival to it's schedule. From 10am until 2pm on both days you can see and fly kites on the busy shores of New Smyrna Beach. The summer version of this event was so successful they decided to add the KiteStop.com sponsored event. Many kites of all sizes and some large show kites can be expected so don't miss this event if you're anywhere nearby. 10/14/2013 Some AKA Convention Results The AKA Convention ended yesterday after a weeks worth of flying and it sure looked to be a good time for all who attended. It is hard to tell from this distance of course, but facebook was certainly busy throughout the week and there were some really nice pictures. Seaside Oregon looks like a really nice place to fly kites. Here are some unofficial results from some of the various competitions: It looks like Bazzer Poulter's Asteroid Kites and their dozen plus armada in the sky stole the show and he was rewarded with a first place Sky Display medal. Bazzer reportedly won at least 5 first place medals in various categories and also got third in Bowed kites. The winner in the Bowed kites category was Adrian Conn who also finished first in Soft and Flexible kites and ultimately captured the Grand National Championship in Kitemaking. Paul DeBakker was first in Masters Dual Line Ballet, Spence Watson has top honors in open indoor unlimited, and Ronda Brewer was tops in the Rokkkaku Battle. The high flying crystal clear images of Matt Cyphert won him a first place medal in Kite Aerial Photography. These are just some of the results coming out of the convention, check the AKA website for official and complete results. You can check some of the pictures out by visiting the AKA facebook page and also the 2013 AKA Convention event page Congratulations to the winners and everyone on what looks like a very successful convention. Next year is Kitty Hawk, see you there! 10/14/2013 Tampa Bay Kiting Wins AKA Kite Club Of The Year! Yes, that's right... Our somewhat local kite club has won national honors from the American Kitefliers Association! Congratulations go out to the everyone for their fine efforts in showing Tampa what kiting is all about from many locations throughout the area including their home field, Treasure Island Florida. Way to go Kelly, Jay, Starna and everyone who has flown with this very active and friendly group. You can catch up with them on facebook at www.facebook.com/kitingtampabay or on their website at www.kitingtampabay.com 10/10/2013 Revolution Kites Names "Team 180Go!" As Their Official Team On Wednesday Revolution Kites announced on its website that Team 180Go! would be the new official Team for Revolution Kites. iQuad, their previous team, has gone on indefinite hiatus since their last performance in September, after years of performing worldwide. Team 180Go!, led by a former iQuad team memeber, is a peppy performance group with quick snap manuvers and full sky routines. Their choice as official team of the Quad-line Standard Revolution Kites comes as little suprise to those who have seen the group perform. The crowd pleasing performances and friendly nature of the team members made them the likely choice. Filling the footprints left in the sand by iQuad's retirement would certainly be an enormous challenge for any group stepping up to that flightline. This team will no doubt be thrilling audiences from day one as they take on that challenge as Revolution Kites' official team. The team name, "180Go!", is a command issued to have the team turn their kites 180 degrees. A clever name for the cutting edge team. You can find out lots more information on their website on Team 180 Go!'s website and of course you should check out Revolution Kite's website as well. ![]() Team 180Go! Treasure Island Kite Festival Treasure Island, Florida January 20th, 2013 10/1/2013 October Events A new month arrives and a slew of activity begins as Fall sets in and the wind picks up a bit. Birthday Bash on Treasure Island Treasure Island Beach, Florida October 5th - 6th, 2013 This event marks Tampa Bay Kiting's second year with activities planned for both Saturday and Sunday including a Saturday Night fly as well. A Free Revolution Clinic with iQuad alumnus Jay Nunes begins at 1pm on Saturday. Tampa Bay Kiting invites everyone to come fly kites and enjoy "A Kiter's Vacation" on their home field. 36th Annual American Kitefliers Association Annual Conference and Grand Nationals Seaside, OR October 8th - 13th, 2013 The annual AKA gathering runs from Tuesday thru Sunday with a full schedule and "Tons of free flying space". The meeting has a positive feel to it this year as the association completes its first year with John Barresi at the presidential helm. Check the AKA website for complete information on how to register and attend the event. One day and child discount tickets are also available so come on by if you are able to get to Seaside. The Annual One Sky One World International Kite Fly for Peace October 13th, 2013 One Sky One World has been celebrated on the second Sunday of October each and every year since its inception in Denver Colorado 28 years ago. All over the world kites are flown to show our shared connection to the earth and sky regardless of territorial borders. More information can be found on their website at OneSkyOneWorld.Org Fall Fun Fly at TI Treasure Island Beach, Florida October 19th - 20th, 2013 The Treasure Island Sport Kite Klub is hosting an AKA sanctioned sport kite event on Treasure Island Saturday and Sunday. Gary Engvall and Peter Dolphin are reportedly planning to fly their large show kites as Kitefliers from all over are expected to converge on the wide beach. Come watch the fun as the sky fills with many wonderful kites big and small. Festival of Flight North Tampa, Florida October 19th - 20th, 2013 The Festival of Flight is an event including all elements of flight from Hot Air Balloons to Kites. Tampa Bay Kiting will be performing both days. 9/22/2013 Crossing The Autumnal Equinox Our season changes once again as the Autumnal Equinox passes by locally today at 4:44 EDT. While the summer was awesome it did seem to flow by all too quickly. There's always more ahead though and October should bring many events to keep plenty of kites flying. Happy Autumn Everyone. 9/5/2013 The New Kiting Magazine Arrives The Autumn edition of Kiting Magazine arrived this past week with an excellent assortment of news, stories, region reports and of course pictures. There are at least 16 full pages devoted to just pictures of kites from the many recent festvals and kiting events. The articals include kiting systems that generate electrical power, kite saftey for Kiting Aerial Photographers, information about next months's AKA Conference, a plan for building spinning wooden line reels for single lines and fighter kites and of course some kind words from John Barresi in the "President's Page". The magazine is a benefit of being an AKA member and is yet another good reason to join and support the lofty organization. Have you seen Bazzer's Meteors? You will. They are just wonderful and if you have your own copy of Kiting you can see them now, just check out the lower right hand corner of page 11. 8/29/2013 Many Events Over the Holiday Weekend Labor Day weekend is here once again to mark the end of the summer and that always seems to bring out the kites. There are many events happening over the three day weekend starting with Burning Man of course. This arts festival of festivals began on Monday and runs through to next Monday with the man burning on Saturday night. A fine way to spend Saturday and Sunday would be to hang out at the 23rd Callaway Kite Flight in Callaway, Nevada. This large field event caters to all kitefliers as everyone is invited to join in filling the skies. There is a Kite Festival just outside Boone, North Carolina called the Mile High Kite Festival on account of the fact that they are 5506 feet above sea level. The Avery County Chamber of Commerece sponsors this event and flying kites in this beautiful mountain region has be tbe very enriching. Near or on the slopes of Beech Mountain Ski Resort the festival will host two kite club demonstrations and free kites for the kids. The event of the weekend has to go to the Antelope Island Stampede Festival in Utah. Now if you're like me you're thinking... island? ...in Utah? but it turns out they have a lake there of not so small porportions. From Friday through Sunday this event brings together Kites, Hot Air Balloons, Live Bands, Laser Tag, Disc Golf, and of course Food! Many notable Kitefliers will be in attendance and iQuad will fly their last performance on Sunday around 4:15. By last perfomance I mean that they will no longer be perfomring at any kite festival anywhere in the world. Seriously. 8/24/2013 World Record Set At WSIKF!!! As the Washington State International Kite Festival (WSIKF) is drawing to a close, word comes of a new world record of Revolution Kites in flight. The previous record of 64 kites was bested by a 9 by 9 matrix of 81 sails aloft. For more than 20 minutes the sky full of kites performed group manuvers under the field direction of John Barresi. The record was set on Friday and hopes were that continued attempts Saturday and Sunday may reach the festival's goal of 100 quads but Saturday's wind waned enough to prevent a try and Sunday's wind is also expected to be too mild. Congratulations go out to all involved! 8/24/2013 Where It's At... Conventionally Speaking An email yesterday from the American Kitefliers Association announced Nags Head, North Carolina as the location for next years convention. The near week long gathering will be held from Tuesday October 7th through Saturday October 11th, 2014. Flying kites on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where kitefliers Orville and Wilbur once hung out is so very appropriate. We will see you there! There is still time to early register for this years convention in Seaside, Oregon. The event runs Tuesday through Sunday from October 8th to October 13th. Discounted early registration for the entire convention or any one day admission are available until September 5th. As always, be sure to check in with the AKA at kite.org for more information. 8/21/2013 With Final Revisions Completed Production Begins on the iPrey! Patrick Tan announced on Facebook today that the final changes have been completed on the iPrey. ![]() Photo by Patrick Tan, used with permission Production is now begining on this new gliding kite with it's adjustable dihedral allowing for fine tuning of it's flight characteristics. Now of course the waiting is the hardest part. See you in a month or so, iPrey!. 8/19/2013 The Washington State International Kite Festival Starts Today Put all those words together, Take out the "The", remove the trailing "Today", mash it all together and you get WSIKF! One of the biggest and most anticipated festivals in the country. It starts today and lasts all week long with a full schedule of events right thru to Sunday. Ever see 64 Revolution Kites in the air at one time? Well, that's the current world record for having the popular quad-lines aloft, this week they will be trying to move the marker a bit further by attempting 100 kites in the air at one time. Those attempts should happen on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. If you are a Rev flier anywhere nearby you probably are already planning to the make the trip. Today's events should be coloring the sky already as the schedule calls for arches, kite trains and multi-line stacks. Rokkaku battles and kite workshops keep everyone busy tomorrow, followed thoughout the rest of the week with kite making, kite fighting, sport competitions, demos, kite ballets, night flights and just about any other kite activity you can think of. You can find more information as well as the National Kite Museum at this link. 7/29/2013 It's a Bird... It's a Plane ... Partick Tan Announces New Glider Last Wednesday fresh from the excitement of the NTUC Indoor Kite Festival in Singapore July 20th and 21st, Patrick Tan started posting pictures of his latest glider kite creation on the facebook group "Glider Geeks". The new glider was soon named the iPrey and is still undergoing some design revisions as Patrick refines the flight characteristics of this freshly hatched graceful kite. Here is a prototype of the iPrey as it evolves on the cutting mat. ![]() Photo by Patrick Tan (used with permission) 7/26/2013 Octopus Meeting On The West Coast The Berkeley Kite Festival is this weekend. If you are anywhere near this huge event, do not miss it. Octopus kites will congregate for their yearly round up as kites of all kinds fly nearby. A full schedule of Demos, Exibitions and Competitions fill the schedule of the two day event. For more information on this festival of festivals visit the Highline Kite Store Festival page or for information on the kite competetition happening at the festival go to the Bay Area Sport Kite League website. On the East coast, kites are planned to fill the sky on Treasure Island this weekend as Kiting Tampa Bay hosts a Friday Night Fly followed by a Mid Summer Kite Party on Saturday. If you're nearby this weekend drop by the beach and see their fun kites. You can help celebrate Jay Nunez's Birthday too! Find more information here on their event page. The Friday Night Fly was postponed from last Friday when the weather less than kite friendly. Storms have kept things grounded for a few weeks now but things look like they may just clear up for this weekend's flying. 7/9/2013 Ruth Whiting and Tim Elverston To Speak At The UF Harn Museum of Art Internationally acclaimed local kite artists Tim Elverston and Ruth Whiting will present a lecture this Thursday, July 11th at the University of Florida's Harn Museum of Art. The artists will speak about their contribution to the University's Viva Florida 500 Celebration of the discovery of Florida by spanish explorer Ponce de Leon with their multi venue exibit, Winds of Change. Their exhibit includes some of their unique flowing kites recently flown on their trip to Europe and of course the huge festival in Cervia, Italy. We will be tweeting live from the lecture starting at six thirty pm. Ok, just kidding. But we will have a complete report on their lecture and all the exhibit venues coming soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() The ongoing exhibition continues through September fifteenth and will include a live lecture given by the artists themselves on July eleventh. Here is a link to an article from the Gainesville Sun's Scene Magazine. 7/8/2013 Sue and Richard Carter String Up Some News Kitefliers Sue and Richard Carter flew some of their three-hundred-plus kites near the St. Augustine Pier this past weekend and made the local paper! They have an amazing collection of kites including some significantly large spinsocks that Sue has made herself. It was truly a pleasure to share the beach with them when we met back in March at the Spring Fun Fly hosted by Extreme Kites. Here is a link to the newspaper story from the St. Augustine Record. 7/1/2013 Kites in the Media This month's Wired Magazine has a quick little blurb on the Zero-G Kite from Prism Kites. Now it's probably just product placement but there is a mention of the kite coming from "Malaysian kite maker Ceewan" and they also explain that it is able to fly "in no breeze at all", so it's not all fluff.
![]() For some reason, it is in the "FETISH" column of the magazine but I suppose that may be accurate. Nonetheless it is good to see kites in the media, and a bit about glider kites too! This kite has been on our wish list for quite some time. Go Zero-G Go! 6/21/2013 Solstice Marks The Start Of Summer Summer officially began in the Northern Hemisphere today at 1:04am EDT as the the year's longest day of daylight has arrived once again. For eons the astronomical event has been celebrated worldwide through rituals, gatherings and parties. At one of the the more well-known events, an estimated twenty thousand people gathered this morning at Stonehenge in celebration of the yearly passing of the seasonal marker under an overcast sky. Today's "Google Doodle" is also offering its own celebration of the season's start as well as many links to knowledgeable sites on the subject, so be sure to visit their search page if you are interested in more information on today's Solstice. Keeping things in balance, the Southern Hemisphere will mark its Summer Solstice on December Twenty First. Welcome Summertime! 6/20/2013 Museum Celebrates Florida's Discovery With Artistic Display Of Kites The Gainesville Sun newspaper is reporting that The University of Florida is celebrating the Five Hundredth Anniversary of Ponce de Leon's discovery of Florida this summer with its Winds of Change exhibit. Internationally acclaimed local kite artists Tim Elverston and Ruth Whiting will be showing more than fifty kites from handmade designs spread across the three exhibit locations including the Harn Museum of Art. The ongoing exhibition continues through September fifteenth and will include a live lecture given by the artists themselves on July eleventh. Here is a link to an article from the Gainesville Sun's Scene Magazine. 6/11/2013 The Gumby Kite Fly Tampa Bay Kiting hosts the Gumby Kite Fly this Sunday, June Sixteenth on Treasure Island Beach. Kites of all kinds are expected to be flying over the wide gulf coast beach sporting its new wide meandering sidewalk system. From big kites to sport kites, kite trains to bear drops, a full complement of fighter kites, and of course the Gumby Drop, there should be something for everyone. You can find the beach behind the Thunderbird and Bilmar Hotels on Treasure Island. Some public parking does exist nearby. The event is slated to run from noon til sundown and we will be there ourselves helping to fill the skies! You can see Tampa Bay Kiting's Event page here 6/11/2012 Paul de Bakker Sets Micron Stack Record A record stack of Prism's Micron kites was flown a weekend ago at the Ocean Shores Festival of Colors Kite Flying Extravaganza in Ocean Shores, Washington, June first and second. Fifty microns in a long colorful train dragged Paul de Bakker across the sand as he struggled to keep the kites aloft and himself upright. Watching the flight of the long collective you can see the kites move in a harmonic syncronized wave as they make their way across the sky with an entire festival of kites in the background. Looks like a fun afternoon to say the least. Congratulations go out to Paul and the crew. You can see the youtube video here. The festival has a facebook page at this link 6/7/2013 Rogallo Kite Festival Flies Over The Outer Banks This Weekend The life and work of inventor and aeronautical engineer, Francis M. Rogallo is celebrated this weekend on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He created the flexible fabric wings that eventually made hang gliding a worldwide sport. Originally the designs he crafted were to help usher space capsules back to a soft landing on earth during the early days of NASA, They were ultimately passed over for the large round parachutes that the Mercury and Gemini capsules floated beneath. His designs were not dismissed however, and NASA continued research in the wings until at least 1967. In 1963 NASA released rights for the patents for commercial use. Rogallo was paid what was at the time the highest amount ever paid to an inventor by the agency, thirty-five thousand dollars. He later moved to Nags Head, North Carolina and developed paragliders for sport aviation. His designs were the basic wing used by hang gliders, with the familiar three sticked frame in a V shape with a cloth fabric wing surface. He also created a frameless wing that is used in power kiting, the rounded V-shaped cloth kite you sometimes see in buggy race pictures. Kitty Hawk Kites presents the festival's thirty first incarnation. Kites on the Outer Banks, not to be missed if you can help it. Here is a link to the Rogallo Kite Festival page. ![]() Francis Rogallo with Rogallo Wing in a wind tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center in 1959. (NASA Image #EL-2001-00444) 6/6/2013
Tropical Storm Andrea Spins Past![]() Andrea spun in the Atlantic most of the morning while building it's winds up to sixty miles per hour as it's pressure dipped below one thosand millibars. Eventually slowing to fourty five miles per hour as it encountered land. ![]() Locally in Gainesville, Florida the clouds were on the dark side and clipped by at a steady pace. It rained all morning and then broke up late in the afternoon as Andrea made her way past us just to the North. Yes, that is the same pier behind Mike Seidel as is behind the Octopus. Small world.

5/16/2013 Events This Weekend Two AKA sanctioned events are happening this weekend on opposite sides of the country. On the East Coast there is the ever popular Hammonasset Kite Festival happening at the Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Connecuit. This will be the tenth year of the festival under its current name after surving the demise of the Southwinds Festival ten years ago. The festival is back this year as a two-day weekend event after the scaled back to one day production from last year. Expect to see kite battles, Bol races, and kites of all shapes and sizes. Gary and Maggie Engvall are reportedly planning to attend which means there will most likely be one or two giant kites flying over the wide grassy fields of the park. Here is a link to a YouTube video from Hammonasset's festival from last year. On the West Coast you will find the Rockaway Beach Kite Festival. This huge event is held every yeat in Oregon and is surely not to be missed by anyone close enough to attend this festival. The event starts on Friday and runs through the weekend. Here is a YouTube video from last year at Rockaway.. 5/16/2013 The Super Over Large Octopus Needs A New Home If you glance at the Gomberg Kites Factory Outlet page, at the top you will see the latest addition to my wish list. The Super Overlarge Octopus! It's (about) two hundred and fifty feet long and is going for a mere fifteen thousand dollars. Best i can tell, this is the largest Octopus kite in the world. It can be split into three sections for easy transport of the nearly two hundred and ten pounds of fabric and line. The Gomberg site admits that this custom build octopus is a "crazy-big kite". Launching requires a team of handlers, a buldozer or two for anchoring and probably a bit of extra insurance as well. You can read a bit more about this kite by following this link to Gombergs' weekly update from July 2009. Here are some YouTube Links of the SOLO flying at the berkley Kite festival from July 2009 launching flying and landing landing 5/3/2013 Events This Weekend The final weekend of National Kite Month brings a few notable festivals and many local fly days. The Twenty-third Kite Day in the Park takes place on Saturday in or near East Strousburg, PA possibly in the Pocono State Park. More information may be found on the poconokitesymphony.com site. A novel concept used at the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival in Virgina this weekend will have two distinct locations. On Saturday the festival will be based in Virginia Beach while Sunday's activities will take place in Portsmouth. More information is available here at this link. There is a Cinco De Mayo Kite Fly at Treasure Island on Sunday. Check with Kiting Tampa Bay for event info. 5/3/2013 Children's Day May Fifth brings the annual Children's Day Celebration in Japan. It has just been renamed from it's original "Boy's Day". The celebration has typically been celebrated with traditionally decorated koi kites being flown from poles like giant wind socks in front of each family's house. With each fish representing a child in the family. Small kites for younger children, larger and longer kites for older children. Here is some information from the net about the day. 5/1/2013 National Kite Month Continues May has arrived but it doesn't end National Kiting Month as the extended celebration lasts through this upcoming weekend. Happy National Kite Month Everyone, Go forth and fly kites! National Kite Month is sponsored by the American Kitefliers Association and the Kite Trade Association International. 5/1/2013 Kiting Film "Indoor" To Debut This Summer Coming "soon" from Mtp Studios is an Indoor Kiting doccumentary directed by Matt Cyphert. View the trailer at mtpstudios.com. You can also drop by the film's facebook page at www.facebook.com/indoorthemovie 5/1/2013 Kiting World Records Set A Peter Foulkes has set a new Twenty Four Hour Land Kite World Distance Record. Somewhere in New Zealand he covered Four Hundred and Thirty Seven Miles mostly on the beach and sometimes through the dry lake district. It sounds like he used the 3m kite most of the time while being overpowered a bit. At one point he even went down to a 2.3m so the wind must have been close to pefect for his attempt and allowed him to work out an eighteen miles\ per hour average. Flying Prototype Kites from Ozone through the night and into the morning light had to be amazing. You can read his story at this link on the ozone kite site. Peter reports that Daniel Spiegel also set a new twenty four hour distance record for kiteskates as he covered 134 miles. At some point in the night Daniel went to bed. It's not perfectly clear but it seems as if Peter may have remained awake the entire day. Congratulations Gentlemen! 4/22/2013 Happy Earth Day, World! Today is Earth Day. A day to celebrate the earth and its environment. This came from the tremendous environmental issue debates that grew out of the sixties and many associated it with the hippie attitudes and demonstrations of the times. No longer found just on college campuses, Earth Day is a well established worldwide Celebration. This date was chosen in nineteen seventy and continues to help remind all of us to stay aware and to be aligned with our environment. Here is a link to earthsky.org explaining some of the pieces that came together to create our modern earth day celebration and why April twenty second was chosen. Todays' Google Doodle has an Earth Day theme and can be found at the top of the main google search page here all day today. All Google Doodles can be found this page at google. 4/20/2013 Happy Four Twenty National Kite Month continues with yet another weekend of flying events across the country from California to New York. The Mighty Kite Flight in Flat Rock, North Carolina is the only AKA Sanctioned event happening this weekend, although there are many other fine gatherings out there. There are no less than four events in Texas alone. Gary Engvall and his wonderful collection of large kites are reportedly headed for the Blue Ridge Kite Festival today, with its large grass field and a thousand free kites for the kids. Anyone near this Salem, Virgina event might want take the opportunity to celebrate National Kite Month at the fifteenth occurance of this well established festival. You can always check the Event Calendar on the AKA site for up to date information on upcoming kiting events, both sanctioned and otherwise. Also starting today is the Weifang Kite Festival in Weifang, China. Weifang is the at center of Kiting History and Manufacturing in China and regarded by some as the World Kite Capital. This is the 30th celebration of this huge event which will run through to the twenty third of April. Earlier this week, iFlite creator Patrick Tan reported passing through Bejing with a bullet train ride still to come, on his way to the festival. 3/30/2013 It's National Kite Month! National Kite Month has arrived. I know it's not quite April and it may seem that we are speaking up early but honestly, today is the first day of kite month. Now conventional wisdom and just plain logic has had me saying for months that kite month is the month of April. But it turns out that National Kite Month actually runs from Saturday March Thirtieth through to Sunday May Fifth. Sorta like the way Happy Hour lasts longer than just a single hour, Kite Month is more than just a single month. Thirty-seven days of kiteflying... it works for me! Happy National Kite Month Everyone, Go forth and fly kites! National Kite Month has their own website that can be seen here at this link. National Kite Month is sponsored by the American Kitefliers Association and the Kite Trade Association International. 3/29/2013 (updated 3/31/2013) SBBB/NABX Pre-Event Activities Begin Today! SBBB is the Spring Break Buggy Blast, NABX is the North American Buggy eXpo which will be happening out on the Ivanpah Dry Lake in Nevada from now until April seventh. Pre-Event runs now until the first and I would suspect it to be quite a hoot. Last year a world record of 82.89 mph was set on the Lake just before the NABX events. No word yet on any new attempts this year or how many riders may attend but previous events have had more than 140 people. Kite, Buggy, Pilot. Pretty Darn Cool. Be Safe out there! You can visit the NABX website here There is also a new site called www.buggyblast.net that looks to have some fresh information and pictures. And the forums can be a great source or informationa and humor as well. Check for the "NABX Forum" on the Power Kite Forum site. (It's under the "Offical Event Forums" subheading down the page a bit) 3/20/2013 Spring Arrives The Spring Equinox passed this morning at 7:02am EDT Happy Spring Everyone! 3/4/2013 March Events in Region 4 The newsletter for our AKA region showed up last thursday and low and behold there was a listing for a kite day event in St. Augustine on March 16th, hosted by our friends at Extreme Kites. The event is being held on the same weekend as Kites over Avalon in Orlando. Gasprarilla Festival of the Arts was listed as a kiting event which was held over the past weekend. Gasprailla can be a good time, I am not sure how kites are involved. Another Florida kiting event is listed for March 24th, the Crazy About Kites Fly at Sand Key Park in Clearwater. Be sure not to miss the opportunity to enjoy these kiting events if you happen to be near any of these locations. Also in the newsletter was word that the lastest copy of Kiting Magazine is on its way to AKA members. If you like kites, joining AKA just for the Magazine may be a worthwhile endeavor. 2/6/2013 iFlite News ![]() Photo by Patrick Tan, used by permission This rainbow of iFlite kites in production was posted recently on Patrick Tan's facebook page. You can see the new orange iFlites as well as the outgoing blue ones. The blue iFlites are being discontinued very soon as their uniquely textured and somewhat floppy fabric is difficult to work with. Patrick says that production will begin on a nice light green sail begining in March. 2/3/2013 Congratulations go out to the Baltimore Ravens on their Superbowl win!
