I am no expert, far far from it, but I really want to make the kites we fly and so begins the journey into kitebuilding and sewing sails. My interests are varied and my goals unending but for now I will concentrate on frameless projects basically consisting of fabric and line. I am drawn to parafoils and a large foil is definitly a goal, but for now we will keep things small.

I always knew I would need to learn to sew but I just wasn't sure how to start. Then one day while reading amonst the forums there was a post by Gary Engvall stating that all you needed to get started was an old sewing machine and that you probably can find one in the back of a closet somewhere. Turns out we had three machines that once belonged to my mother-in-law. So I took out the little brother machine and set about trying to figure out how get the needle threaded.

Turns out there's lots of people making youtube videos on just that topic. In fact, there is an array of sewing help available on the youtubes. If you are looking for expert advise you may want to pursue those sources. If you want to see how a beginner fares then you're in the right place.

Project1: getting_started
This was the first project. just something to sew two pieces of fabric together. I cut five hexagons and a pentagon from a cheap bedsheet i purchased from walmart. Once sewn together the project resembled a parachute.
