March... um wait a minute ... April, yes April is National Kite Month and it's coming quick.

Yesterday an email arrived from the American Kitefliers Association's Mike Mosman, who is the Director at Large of the 2013 National Kite Month Committee. This was to announce the Poster Contest for next years National Kite Month. Entries must be submitted by January 24, 2013.

Yet another call for those artists among us to create artwork for a large audience while representing and supporting the kiting community.

There are categories for adults and children so everyone can have fun getting involved.

Breaking News: One Thousand iFlites!

Congratulations go out to Patrick Tan on creating the 1000th iFlite, December 16th, 2012. An amazing accomplishment. Much to the delight of iFliters everywhere.

iFlites now come in blue as well as the previous two colors, pink and the original white. Patrick says Orange will be the next color. He has also mentioned that a smaller iFlite is in the pipeline. Keep 'em coming, Patrick!

Kiting Magazine Winter Edition

Also from the AKA, The new Kiting magazine arrived on November 27th. It's sixty pages and packed with pictures of kites. There is plenty to read and look at and it's nice to have a real magazine to leaf through.

AKA Convention Logo Contest

The new 2013 AKA Convention Logo Contest is underway. Yep that's right, so get to drawing, all of you creative people!

Read the fine print at aka.kite.org. The chosen artwork must fit many formats and resolutions. So, it offers a challenge to anyone wishing to attempt this endeavor. oh, and the winner gets free admission to the National Conference in Seaside, Oregon.

There is a bit of kiting news to report. This month, our new president sent out an email. Oh, no , not that president, the newly elected American Kitefliers Association's president, John Barresi.

This was his first presidential entry on the AKA site, as far as i can tell anyway. He touched a bit on all things kiting, but most importantly, he announced the new 2013 AKA Convention Logo Contest. Yep that's right, so get to drawing, all of you creative people!

Read the fine print at aka.kite.org. The chosen artwork must fit many formats and resolutions. So, it offers a challenge to anyone wishing to attempt this endeavor. oh, and the winner gets free admission to the National Conference in Seaside, Oregon.

There is plenty to read and look at and it's nice to have a real magazine to leaf through. I did notice that the Region 4 news omitted any mention of Kiteoberfest. And in the pull-out kiting calendar, there is an ad reference to the iFlite in March by into the wind. However, I don't see any iFlites for sale on their site. Odd.

Anyone near Treasure Island Florida can avoid all the shoping lines and tension by heading to Tampa Bay Kiting's 2nd Annual No Lines but Kite Lines Black Friday Fly on their wide beach. Certainly more relaxing than standing in those other lines.

The event runs through Sunday the 25th

The Bilmar Resort has a web cam, called their "Buddy Cam", that they often point at the beach. You may be able to catch some kiting activity on it from time to time.

Happy Halloween!

Hurricane / Cyclone Sandy still hangs over the northeast causing continued problems as millions of people work to deal with the aftermath of the destruction and turmoil that churned through the northeast.

It is Halloween and so ends a busy month of kiting. From Enid, to all around the world, and then two awesome days on Treasure Island. Thanks for all the kiting fun, October!

November will bring the cold and tend to quiet the schedule down a bit. Nonetheless, there is fun ahead!

On October 20th and 21st, Tampa Bay Kiting hosted the KiteoberFest Kite Festival on Treasure Island Florida. It was wonderful.

The month began with the AKA Annual Grand Nationals and Conference in Enid, Oklahoma. Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, really, I am not making that up!

Happy Tuesday.

Hurricane Sandy was labeled a "Post Tropical Cyclone" as it charged ashore Monday evening. Everything has changed overnight for anyone living in the wide path of this storm system. Staying safe, warm, and dry has become impossible for a large number of people. This day will reveal the full effects and the challenges ahead. A tough day lies ahead for everyone on the northeast coast.

Needles to say, avoid flying in unsafe conditions and stay aware of this storm.

The new 8pm est advisory just came out. They are now calling it a "Post Tropical Cyclone", but don't let that fool you, that still means hurricane. So it's technical classification has changed somehow, hmmm.

Winds are still at 80 and the pressure is incredibly low. Like really low ... 946mb. (@9pm winds:80 pressure:947mb) That's a crazy strong vacuum, and it means a lot of energy has to go away before that top stops spinning.

If you are anywhere near the path of this storm, and a heck of a lot of people are, hunker down and stay dry.

As always, avoid flying in unsafe conditions and stay aware of this storm.

This week begins a busy month for kiting....

Today, the sixth day of the AKA Annual Conference will fly by in Enid, Oklahoma. Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. No, Really... I am not making that up!

Today's wind is predicted to be a solid 12mph once again, but the kicker will be the temperature, as it will barely make it to fifty today.

With less than fifty thousand residents, you know this community can't help but notice the invasion of kite people as the full wrath of the American Kitefliers Association has taken to the skies of their town.

This week begins a busy month for kiting....

Today, the fifth day of the AKA Annual Conference will fly by in Enid, Oklahoma. Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. No, Really... I am not making that up!

Today's wind is predicted to be a solid 12mph, building to 15 in the late afternoon.

With less than fifty thousand residents, you know this community can't help but notice the invasion of kite people as the full wrath of the American Kitefliers Association has taken to the skies of their town.

The conference runs through Saturday night, with a schedule packed with workshops, classes, meetings, and of course lots of flying covering an incredibly diverse array of disciplines. Today's events include a sport kite emphasis including quad-line instruction and "fun with four lines" out on field three with two of the best quadline pilots around, John Barresi and Ben Dantonio. Today, early registration begins in Enid, Oklahoma. Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. No, Really... I am not making that up!

With less than fifty thousand residents, you know there had to be some interesting moments last night in the hotels and motels of this community, as the full wrath of the American Kitefliers Association began to firmly settle into town. It had to be like the wild bunch coming to town, in the old west. Ok, it's kitefliers, so... it was probably a fairly peaceful evening. :-)

Update: Isaac has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm

Hurricane Isaac continues to churn on the coast of Louisiana.

It continues to spin at 80mph and its track has slowed to an aggravating 6 mph. It will be a long day for all involved, and despite the fact that this storm did not reach the predicted strength, much destruction and many inconveniences await.

Here are two pictures from inside stores 50 miles inland on Tuesday. The shortages of water and bathroom tissue demonstrate the abnormal situations caused by such a massive storm.

Tropical Storm Isaac just became a bona fide Hurricane as it continues to head towards the Big Easy. Turns out this storm is unpredictable, but in a good way! Despite warnings and predictions of a category 2 hurricane, this storm remained just below hurricane strength, until 2pm today. That's great news, but there is still about 12 hours before landfall.
