Kite JournalWednesday May 29th, 2013Living On Cloud Minelife in the virtual fast laneTime is still flying by, it's the time of year when the inertia of our active schedule seems to actually pick time up and make it skip along even faster. Which kinda sucks because of all the cool events scheduled so closely tends to make it all a blur. But it's a good blur, and I am not complaining one bit. Well, not more than a bit, anyway. Although invisible to the naked eye, there have been lots of things happening behind the scene here are windstock.net. Technically speaking anyway. I have been automating some maintenance tasks and populating some new database tables that should soon add more features and function to the site. this journal entry is in progress... more soon ok, this entry was from yesterday, and i never completed it. I have moved it to today because I had accidentally posted it as Monday's entry, so I will just clean all that up by acting like it was supposed to here in Wednesday's post all along. This site has been hosted by godaddy since it started serving web pages to the public last year. I used it for various website development testing for a year or so before that and I also have had some other projects hosted by them as well. Having a site hosted for me meant all I have had to worry about is the web pages themselves and not the underlying server setup and maintenance. It's been a pretty sweet deal as it all has been very easy to create and maintain. However, there are a few points in development where my hands are tied as to what capabilities and actions I am allowed to undertake. So it's time to move up to a new reality... a virtual reality! One of the services godaddy provides is the "Virtual Private Server". This is a webserver that I can maintain like it was my own server. It's like having a real computer only it's not real, it's um, virtual. It's in the Cloud, if you will. I have complete control over what programs and services the system provides, I have to set up databases and domain name servers and all kinds of other cool stuff. It is a bit more work, but lots of fun if you like messing with computers, and if you can't tell, I do like messing with computers. So we are moving services from "Hosting" to the new "VPS". Hopefully there won't be any big problems, but if the site disappears for a day or so, you can bet I flipped the wrong switch or something. So I am spending some quality time reading manuals and learning the "Plesk Panel". The wind is a good solid ten miles per hour today as it was all day yesterday. The next two days should be more of the same, if not stronger. So hopefully I can get out during lunch soon and fly a Rev. I did receive the Revs parts I ordered last week, so tonight I will try to get those in place in preperation for our vacation coming up in a couple of weeks. There's lots of things going on in the kiting world, I will try to touch on some of that tomorrow. |
