Kite JournalWednesday March 13th, 2013Excitement BuildsThree days until the spring fun fly! It's just another day that I should be out flying but I stayed in and had lunch instead. It's been showing a solid sixteen mile per hour wind for the last two hours, but i choose to not push things as I anxiously await the upcoming fun fly happening this Saturday. I know, it's just kites, but it's fun stuff and I just can't wait. It's all part of the fun really, I like the wait, it's the time to ponder what to fly first, what to fly together, how to rig the line laundry, what not to forget to fly, and just basically plan ahead. Ok, I am not a good planner per se, but I do ponder very well. So, I shall ponder the event ahead. This event is practically in our back yard. St. Augustine is our closest beach so we have a home field advantage! The weather is extremely nice out and it is looking like that should hold. So, like I said, excitement builds. Flying kites at the beach is a blast with good clean wind and lots of happy people. Last time we flew in St. Augustine we had a real positive reaction from those walking past and I must say there were more than a couple of interesting conversations with well wishers. Part of the fun is knowing that others are enjoying the kites as much as we are enjoying flying them. There are always smiles from those passing by, and then every now and then someone will step up, say "excuse me" and start asking questions. It's all good fun even for this introvert. There are some standard questions that get asked routinely. "How much do they cost?" is a fairly regular one. Then there's questions about how all the kites can fly so close to each other without tangling. Some just walk up and stand close by and stare for awhile before they eventually ask the question I fear the most... "Did you make those?". Ok, fear isn't the right word there, but you get the idea. I want to say "yes! yes, i made them all!!" but of course I can't say that. Peter Lynn, The Gombergs and many other designers and creators made our kites possible. Their work is amazing and I have the pleasure of flying those creations. One day we will be flying a big inflatable of our own creation, I have no doubt, but for now I am having a ball flying theirs. And in the meantime, I will be honing my sewing skills. So, this Saturday, if you can find a way to make it to St. Augustine Beach, or to the Kites Over Avalon event in Orlando, I highly recommend taking the time to kick back and hang out with the kite people. Lots of fun ahead. |
